Brooklyn based Raya Brass Band will be hosting a Balkan/Gypsy music dance party at Coco 66 in Greenpoint on May 6th. Brooklyn’s Japanese Gypsy rock band Kagero will open the evening with upbeat Romanian tunes. Raya Brass Band will bring the party to the middle of the dance floor with their catchy Balkan and Gypsy brass band tunes, and the 10-piece Philadelphia based Balkan band The West Philadelphia Orchestra will round out the evening with Eastern European tunes tinged with jazz, punk rock, soul and cheesesteak.
Raya Brass Band recorded their second album in January and has just launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for production with a release planned for early August. They have been a fixture on the late night underground party circuit since the band formed over two years ago and have performed at such venues at (Le) Poisson Rouge, Barbes, Webster Hall and at Lincoln Center Winter’s Eve.
On May 6, Kagero will perform at 8:30, followed by Raya Brass Band at 9:30 and West Philadelphia Orchestra at 10:30. Tickets are $10 at the door.
